UPCOMING EVENTS CALENDAR

Sunday School
You Believe What!?
Beginning this Sunday, May 13, and continuing through June, Heart of the Rockies will present a series of 45-minute classes designed to explore topics of interest to members and friends of Heart of the Rockies.  Each Sunday morning at 9:50, a different topic will be introduced and discussed.  Each class will be independent of those that proceed and those that follow.

The facilitator will introduce the topic, present some background information (Scriptural and non-Scriptural), and then guide a discussion of that topic.  The intent is not to provide “the answer” to a given topic, but to allow those present to express their viewpoints, ask questions, and reach toward what they believe to be true.  All teens and adults are welcome.  Beginning in June (after our children’s classes are over), structured activities and supervision will be provided for young children during the Sunday school time.

Youth Sunday, May 20
Youth will be leading worship May 20, 8:30 & 11 a.m.  It’s always one of our most inspiring Sundays.  Join the youth after the second service for yummy Albert Pit BBQ and bid on incredible items available in the silent auction.  All proceeds will go toward summer camps and this year’s youth mission trips to Pine Ridge Reservation and Alamosa.

Amanda Henderson’s Ordination

In partnership with our regional church, Heart of the Rockies will ordain Amanda Henderson on Saturday, June 30 at 1 p.m.  Many of you know Amanda and Kyle from their years worshipping and serving with us.  Warren Clark, one of Amanda's professors at Brite Divinity School will participate in the ordination and preach in our Sunday services.

We celebrate with Amanda as she has been named as one of the 2012 award recipients of The Beatitudes Society.  The society identifies and equips emerging leaders to grow progressive Christian faith communities for the sake of justice and the common good.  Society founders saw that Christianity was widely perceived as intolerant and exclusive, and they envisioned a day when Christianity might be known for the kind of values expressed in the Beatitudes of Jesus, found in Matthew’s version of the Jesus story (5:1-12): “blessed are the poor…the meek…the merciful…the peacemakers…”  The award comes with a $10,000 grant and a yearlong series of quarterly Fellows’ gatherings in Berkeley, California.

Vacation Bible School 2012, June 4-8, 9 a.m. – noon

Vacation Bible School is just around the corner.  There is always room for more volunteers!  Our theme is SKY – Everything is Possible with God.  If you happen to have any extra parachutes or pilot’s caps hanging around, consider loaning them to us for the week.  A list of items we could use is available in the lobby.  Any donation will be appreciated.  We usually have around 60 kids and hope to have at least that many this year.  Please fill out a volunteer form and register your children.  Be encouraged to invite and register your grandchildren and kids in your neighborhood.  Cost is $10 per child before May 31 or $15 June 4.  Scholarships would also be appreciated. Contact Sherri Jackson (204-1774) if there are questions.

Pentecost Offering

Later this month, our congregation will receive an over-and-above offering to support the work of New Church Development in our region and throughout the Disciples.  Our gifts will provide the same kind of support that our new church received in 1992-1996: training for new pastors, help toward new pastors’ compensation package, program support and more.

When you count the region’s gift of our land (just its purchase price in 1994), the Central Rocky Mountain Region provided nearly one-half million dollars to start our new church!  Please give generously in this special offering.  Envelopes will be provided, or mark your check, “Pentecost Offering”.

Matthews House Event

Heart of the Rockies will be hosting an evening meal at the Matthews House on Wednesday, May 23, 5:30-7 p.m.  If the weather is nice, we will fix a picnic with hot dogs and hamburgers.  Maybe you'd like to be part of the team that will serve the food and enjoy this lively gathering of young people.  Matthews House provides many services for those 18-25 who are overcoming past problems and searching for self-worth and a place in the adult world.  It is a nurturing place, and lots of fun.  Call Bill Stout (223-6976) or Karen Smith (282-9015) to be included.

Alternative Tour to Palestine & Israel
Join our pastor Jeff and his wife as they host an alternative tour to the Middle East, exploring the holy sites and meeting the Jews, Muslims and Christians who live in the land.  You can learn more about the tour here.
