Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the preparatory season of Lent. We are marked with ashes to remind us that we are from God and that we ultimately return to God, that the powers of sin and death are real, and that the powers of sin and death do not have the final say. We will confess our part in the wounding of the world, we will admit our mortality, and we will do so surrounded by the love and mercy of God and by the love and mercy of community.
